The trenches were only rarely in the Second World War.
It is very simple. Weapon and ammunition is no longer under the earth. Of course, the deep fire of mortars and artillery is still a problem, but in World War I - these are positions open space for slaughter with machine guns and artillery co-chaired.
The artillery has an impact on the men underground at least get a direct hit limited. Most outbreaks of shells increases after impact. Therefore, soldiers helped fall flat when the artillery came in
During World War II greatly expanded the role of the Air Force has been interrupted impractical. Insert the armies in the trenches that make them vulnerable to attacks during the Second World War air. Air power was in its infancy in the First World War.

In a tactical sense in the short term, the trenches, a relatively small force, the forces of aggression contained much higher for obvious reasons, they were protected and management in a protected area, while the enemy is time.
In the long run, however, an impasse that is created that the war lasted, and created the conditions for referring it. If this were not enough, the generals, who captured a century ago, insisted repeatedly that command on the face of an entrenched enemy with weapons of the 20th Century concentrated.

It was difficult for the enemy advance, and also the tendency to fight for a small area, which receives limited waged against the civilian population, over-involved.

However, there was much good in them.
